07/03/2013: Un-Interrrupted Focus

focus1

I was filling out an application form for a new job today. I decided to not let anything distract me and boy did it work!

I also noticed just how distracted I could become. Ever so often, I  would think about Facebook, my phone, Pinterest, what I needed to do later, what I wasn’t doing and should be doing, how I needed to sort out my bedroom (again) etc. Each time this happened I would say to myself “Ok, that is not urgent or important, focus on the task at hand” and get back to my work. I had to say it so many times! But it worked.

I completed the application form with and hour to spare and was able to browse the net to my heart’s content after. It felt like a revelation, a break through but it is something I should always have been doing and need to habitually do. It feels really good when you get something done and eliminates worry. So that is my challenge for the week: To set each task, focus on it, complete it then reward myself after if possible.

Make things happen

Good thing of the day: Job application completed and sent off! Hopefully I get it!

  1. It’s really easy to get lost and unfocused, Theo. I find myself in your exact situation! I don’t even realize nowadays that I’m constantly checking emails and doing all these things when before I was so good at focusing on the task at hand. It takes conscious effort!

    • It really does Vincent! Glad I’m not the only one! And the funny thing is, it seemed amazing to me that it worked but it was nothing new. If I could focus like this on every task like this I will get so much done! It’s self discipline that needs to be worked on. We have let getting distracted become such a habit that we haven’t realise how much time we can waste. We have to consciously determine what’s important, get those things done first with uninterrupted focus then we can get to the fun stuff. You find that you actually have more time than you thought! The power of actually doing what you should do eh?
