I spent today filling out a long job application form before going to work and will probably spend tomorrow doing the same but while I was doing that I happened to come across a document I had previously created called ‘My Bucket List’ and decided to take a look.
I remember seeing one of my friends create one after watching the film of the same name (starring Morgan freeman and Jack Nicholson). I then decided to watch it and thought the movie was great! It was really touching. Sibling One doesn’t agree, she fell asleep half way through! But I suggest you make up your own mind. Nonetheless there were lessons to be learned from the film which was all about two men with terminal cancer trying to accomplish all the things they wanted to in life before they ‘kicked the bucket’. They wrote out a list of ‘Things to do before I die’ and went on a journey to do all of them.
My friend created theirs on a poster and wrote it out as a list which they stuck on the wall but being a visual person mine was done with pictures. I gathered pictures that represented everything I would like in life and wanted to do and this board would be used to remind me of what I want to achieve. Because I created it in a word document I forgot a bit about it so I have to print it off so I can see it. I’ve now put it as my desktop background so that every time I turn my mac on I see it.
It has things like: Learning to Ice-skate, riding an elephant, driving an Aston Martin, learning to play the piano, working in the media industry, going water skiing etc…
Then inspiration struck: “Why not make one for the year?”. Obviously I don’t wish to die by the end of the year so technically it’s not a ‘bucket’ list but its a visual representation of all the things I want to achieve. A ‘Goals to Achieve’ board (couldn’t think of a fancier name).
It’s only March but already life has started to fall into a pattern, which when focused so much on the day-to-day grind can make you forget all the things you said you wanted to do this year. It’s easy to see things from the outside but harder to see when you’re in it. I needed a reminder.
I think this is a great thing to have when you’re feeling demotivated or have lost sight of why you are doing certain things. So get creative! Take an afternoon, go to a craft store buy a board, take some pictures or get some magazines and start finding pictures of your goals. Or if you like all things tech but want to do it without fuss do it on Pinterest. It really helps but can get a little addictive so try not to get distracted! Put everything on it, even the craziest things because you never know!
I’m also creating a board with the things I have already achieved on it just to remind me when I get discourage that if I could accomplish those things then of course I can do whatever I’m worrying about at the time. At the moment it’s got my graduation pic (degree), my mac, passing my driving test…It keeps me grateful and motivated to add to it. You could even transfer things from your ‘Bucket List’ board to your ‘Achievements’ board to track your progress.
So what on your bucket list?
Good thing of the day: ‘Bucket List’ made, more motivation for the year.
